Tanja Zimmermann: Metafora in artefakt: bosanski mostovi kot stičišče kultur in (trans)nacionalnih identitet. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2010. 5–23.

Tanja Zimmermann: Metaphor and Artefact. Bosnian Bridges as the Juncture of Cultures and (Trans)National Identities. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2010. 5–23.
Bridges are not just functional constructions. Their metaphorical dimension transforms them into real or even absolute metaphors. Thus they not only mark spatial but also temporal divergences (the sychronousness of the asynchronous), enabling encounters and exchanges between various national and transnational constructions of identities. In so doing, the bridge takes on the function of the surgeon’s stitch (suture), connecting various cultural traditions and communities. The “suture” of cultures and identities comes about with the aid of specific narrative strategies, which can be compared with the psychoanalytical procedure of “suture” in Jacques Lacan and Jean-Pierre Oudart. In the present article, these strategies are analysed with regard to examples from literature (Robert Michel, Ivo Andrić) and film (Veljko Bulajić: Bitka na Neretvi, Jean-Luc Godard: Notre musique).

Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2010. 25–34.

Tim Pogačar: “S/he was born in ...”: The Biographical Complex of Slovene Literary History. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2010. 25–34.
The article attempts to explain why the biographical framework takes a relatively more important position in Slovene literary studies than in other areas of study. The author suggests certain possible explanations for why information about the birth and death of writers gains such emphasis in literary history. This practice could indicate (1) the overlapping of academic literary studies and criticism, (2) the conservative view of Slovene academic literary history, as is identified as typical by Hayden White (1973), or (3) a powerful, and frequently also productive, positivist tendency in Slovene literary studies. (4) It is also assumed that this habit reflects increased sensitivity and expectations regarding historical changes, particularly from 1980 onwards. (5) The most speculative explanation is that in former practice greater meaning was attributed to age differences in general, which is also reflected in writing about literature as a nation-building activity.

Ana Jelnikar: Evropa in njeni »drugi«: Kosovel zre na »Vzhod«. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2010. 25–56.

Ana Jelnikar: Europe and Its “Other”: Kosovel Gazes towards the East. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2010. 25–56.
The article deals with the significance and role of Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore for the work and reflections of Srečko Kosovel. As well as revealing the historical logic that led to Kosovel, on the background of his own position as a downtrodden “Other” within Europe, identifying in many ways with his Indian contemporary, the author of the present article offers a model of perception of the “East” that differs from classical romantic or colonial “Orientalism”. Tagore was important to Kosovel primarily as a contemporary who was engaged with similar issues to those that concerned the young poet. The article deals primarily with Kosovel’s ambivalent relationship towards Europe, or his criticism of Europe, which is comparable with Tagore’s criticism of Western civilisation (imperialism and nationalism). It offers an original reading of Kosovel’s Ecstasy of Death as an antiimperialist, liberation poem that is in line with certain better known poets and thinkers fromthe non-European world who deal with the decolonisation.

Alenka Jensterle - Doležal: Fenomen mesta v opusu Ivana Cankarja in Zofke Kveder. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2010. 57–70.
V prispevku se ukvarjamo s semantiko mesta v slovenski moderni: zanima nas povezava Ivana Cankarja in Dunaja in Zofke Kveder in Prage. Poseben problem pomeni tematiziranje prostora velikega mesta – metropole – in mestnih motivov v njunem ustvarjanju.

Alenka Jensterle - Doležal: The Phenomenon of the City in the Opus of Ivan Cankar and Zofka Kveder. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2010. 57–70.
The article deals with the semantics of the city in Slovene modernism, in particular with Ivan Cankar’s association with Vienna and Zofka Kveder’s link with Prague. The two Slovene authors are amongst the multilingual authors who represented a unique phenomenon in the multicultural Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. They both undertook their creative work in the atmosphere of various cultures and languages in a foreign city with different cultural codes. The two authors were also linked creatively: Cankar had a great deal of influence on the creativity of Zofka Kveder, who was in turn Cankar’s first translator for German readers, thus also presenting his work to the Czech cultural sphere. At this time, Ivan Cankar was regarded as the most characteristic author of modernism, while Zofka Kveder, a mediator of Slovene culture and literature, succeeded in the Czech cultural sphere, partly thanks to Zdenka Hásková. The treatment of the theme of the space of the large city-metropolis and city motives in their work represents a special issue. The opus of Ivan Cankar is marked by various Viennese motives (the novel The Ward of Mary Help of Christians ), social, aesthetic and other city images from Erotica and Vignettes onwards. Vienna, above all the experience of the suburb (Ottakring) and the city centre, has a very specific function in the narrative structure of Cankar’s sketches. In contrast, Kveder wrote very little about Prague: the image of romantic Prague dominates, marked by historical and cultural emblems (the tale Slikar Novak, the novel Hanka).

Elizabeta Jenko: A Research Platform for Special Didactics and Slovene. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2010. 71–80.
The article presents an interdisciplinary platform for special didactics at the University of Vienna that has given priority to the task of linking research and educational practice, and to assigning special didactics an appropriate position in both science and education. The platform compares the situation of individual specialist didactics, seeking common points that should contribute to the establishment of a comprehensive theoretical model as a bridge between disciplines, as well as enhancing the advancement of this scientific area. The significance of special didactics for Slovene in the extremely heterogeneous environment outside the Republic of Slovenia is demonstrated.
