Irena Orel: O slovenskem jeziku v literarnozgodovinskih razpravah Jožeta Koruze v Jeziku in slovstvu. Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 21–33.
Ključne besede: Jože Koruza, zgodovina slovenskega jezika, starejše slovensko slovstvo, Jezik in slovstvo

Irena Orel: About the Slovenian language in the literary history articles of Jože Koruza published in the journal Jezik in slovstvo (Language and Literature). Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 21–33.
The article begins with a brief reminiscence of professor and mentor Jože Koruza and focuses on a presentation of the 14 articles from the earlier literature, which also include linguistic topics, published in the journal Jezik in slovstvo between 1972 and 1983. The contributions synthetically, analytically or thematically highlight the history of all three literary genres and different text types in all periods: from the Old Church Slavonic tradition (a Slovenian Glagolitic document from the 15th century), Slovenian prayer forms in reviving the thesis of the written tradition in the Middle Ages, official and legal texts from the 16th century onwards, the beginnings of secular poetry, Christmas carols, religious plays, and art poetry (Vodnik, Stanič) and secular drama (Dev, Linhart, Drabosnjak, Levstik) in the 18th and 19th centuries. In these works, language is defined depending on its application and use in a variety of social classes, functions, literary genres or types, and as literary expression with the typical syntactic, lexical and stylistic features of the standard language and of dialects.

Herta Maurer-Lausegger: Koroško bukovništvo skozi čas. Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 35–48.
Ključne besede: bukovništvo, ljudski spisi, substandardna različica slovenščine 18. in 19. stoletja na Koroškem, ljudsko slovstvo, apokrifne molitve, avtorstvo, bukovniški jezik, različice Duhovne brambe

Herta Maurer-Lausegger: Carinthian popular writings (folklore texts) in the course of time. Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 35–48.
The phenomenon of Carinthian popular style writings, which is of literary and sociological interest, was known above all in the Carinthian-Upper Carniolan-Styrian regions. The authors were simple people, usually either farmers or craftsman, who spread popular texts with religious, apocryphal and mystic content written in a Slovenian regional substandard. In the copying phase, they based their writings on protestant texts (from the 16th century onwards). This was followed by a translating phase (from German, mid 18th century) and crowned by the so-called classic bukovništvo (towards the end of the 18th century). The language in these texts, which appear in numerous printed and manuscript versions, is diverse and inconsistent. This is illustrated by passages from the Carinthian Duhovna bramba, a compilation of apocryphal prayer and ancient blessing formulas.
Keywords: bukovništvo, popular style writings, supradialectal substandard Slovene of the 18th and 19th centuries in Carinthia, folk literature, apocryphal prayers, authorship, bukovniki language, versions of Duhovna bramba

Monika Deželak Trojar: Oris J. L. Schönlebna kot govornika in pridigarja. Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 49–58.

Monika Deželak Trojar: A Sketch of Johann Ludwig Schönleben as an Orator and Preacher. Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 49–58.
The article presents Johann Ludwig Schönleben (1618–1681) as an orator and preacher, and addresses his rhetorical activity through three main periods. From his early rhetorical period, nine speeches have been preserved as well as his odes to Habsburg rulers, who proved to be important venerators of the Virgin Mary. During his most active period, Schönleben prepared four collections of sermons in German and Latin for publication, and three of his speeches were printed independently. If his manuscript sermons had also been preserved, his oeuvre would have included five additional collections. Towards the end of his life, Schönleben only appeared in the role of an occasional preacher; a preacher’s manual with allegories was printed posthumously. The conclusion outlines the main characteristics of his sermons and shows that Schönleben clung to the traditional Jesuit ecclesiastical rhetoric of the post-Tridentine period, even though his personal preaching style also displayed certain features of contemporary Baroque rhetorical elements.
Keywords: Johann Ludwig Schönleben (1618–1681), oratory, rhetorical prose, sermon, ecclesiastical rhetoric of the post-Tridentine period

Luka Vidmar: Franc Wützenstein: prvi romanopisec na Kranjskem. Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 59–69.
Prispevek obravnava malo znanega kranjskega pisatelja Franca barona Wützensteina (1631‒1677).

Luka Vidmar: Franc Wützenstein: The First Novel Writer In Carniola. Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 59–69.
The paper deals with the almost unknown Carniolan writer Baron Franz von Wützenstein (1631‒1677). It first shows that, until the end of the 20th century, Valvasor was the only one to preserve some knowledge of his works for the intellectual public in Slovenia and Germany. It then describes the history of Wützenstein’s family in Carniola and reconstructs his life from his birth in Ljubljana to his death in the Lebek Castle near Vače. Finally, it describes his works: Vulcani Liebes-Garn (1669), which is a translation of the novel La rete di Vulcano by Ferrante Pallavicino; the novel Schicksel der lieben Bellimire und Corilanders (1671), which is either an original or translated work; and La perfetta maritata oder die vollkommene Vermählte (1687), which is a translation of the manual La perfecta casada by Luis de León. There is still no known extant copy of the work La muta loquace, das ist: die Stumm-Redende, which was probably a translation of the novel La muta loquace by Giovanni Antichio.

Igor Grdina: H književnosti enega jezika. Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 71–80.

Igor Grdina: To the literature of one language. Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 71–80.
The medieval feudal tripartite social order of clerics, warriors, and farmers and craftsmen also produced language division into Latin, German and Slovenian. The main cohesive means became the Christian religion, which, due to the universality of the salvific message, demanded the use of Slovenian in sermons, sacrament of penance and basic prayers, and thus (co-)shaped language communities. The article shows the spread of spoken and written Slovenian in all three orders and for all uses from the Middle Ages, through the Reformation, to the Enlightenment circle of Zois and Pohlin.

Blanka Bošnjak: Narativne strategije v pridigah Matije Vertovca. Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 81–89.

Aleksander Bjelčevič: Osnove verzologije: iregularni verz in cezura. Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 91–109.
Članek je nadaljevanje članka Kako poučevati verzologijo: silabotonična metrika in ritmika iz številke 3-4 Jezika in slovstva (Bjelčevič 2015); ker pa presega potrebe srednje šole, sem ga poimenoval Osnove verzologije. Tokrat obravnavam dva ali tri pojave, o katerih šolske knjige včasih govorijo napak, npr. cezura in iregularni verz vs. svobodni verz.
Ključne besede: iregularni verz, cezura, svobodni verz, jambski enajsterec, epski deseterec

Aleksander Bjelčevič: Introduction to Verse Theory: Irregular Accentual-Syllabic Verse and Caesura. Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 91–109.
We describe and define two concepts: irregular accentual-syllabic (syllabotonic) verse and caesura. Irregular accentual-syllabic verse is a type of poetic composition in which lines of the same rhythm (e.g., iambic) but very different lengths (e.g., 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 14 syllables) follow each other in an unpredictable order and have stanzas of variable lengths. This is not yet free verse, as it preserves iambic, trochaic or amphibrachic, etc. rhythm. In accentual-syllabic and syllabic versification, caesura is an obligatory word boundary at a fixed place in every line of a poem (in Serbo-Croatian deseterac and its trochaic imitations, it is after the 4th syllable). Therefore, caesura is not a pause. Slovenian metres with caesura are: trochaic 8-, 10-, 12-, 14-, 15-, 16-syllable lines with caesuras after the 8-th syllable; Nibelungen verse has a caesura after the 7th syllable, iambic 12-syllable alexandrine after the 6th syllable, amphibrachic 11- and 12-syllable lines after the 6th syllable, etc., whereas iambic pentameter has no caesura.
Keywords: irregular verse, caesura, free verse, iambic pentameter, epic decasyllable

Denis Poniž: Jože Koruza, Slovenska dramatika 1945–1965. Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 111–120.

Denis Poniž: Slovenian Drama 1945–1965, Jezik in slovstvo . Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 111–120.
The project Slovenian Literature 1945–1965 was published in two books in 1967 by a group of young literary scholars from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana. One of the participants was Jože Koruza, who discussed contemporary drama. In order to analyse individual works and dramatists’ opuses, and to logically classify them into several semantically and/or conceptually related groups, he used a process that relied on three methodological bases. He placed writers into five morphological and conceptual formations and stressed both the similarities and the differences of the dramaturgical structures in their writing. He thus developed dramaturgical analysis when studying these texts and showed the features that separate dramatic works from other literary texts. However, he always critically reflected on his analytical processes, and, as much as was possible in the society of the time, developed them beyond ideological boundaries.

Tomaž Toporišič: Jože Koruza, sodobna slovenska dramatika in gledališče. Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 121–129.

Tomaž Toporišič: Jože Koruza, contemporary Slovenian drama and theatre. Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 121–129.
The essay begins with the assumption that Jože Koruza commenced his research on Slovenian contemporary drama and theatre along with his important activities as a founding member of the first experimental stage in Slovenia Oder 57 (Stage 57). His work as a historian and theoretician of Slovenian drama therefore interlinked with his theatrical activities. When writing about the specificity of Slovenian contemporary drama, he also wrote about its interdependence and dialogical relation with contemporary European drama and theatre after WWII. At the same time, however, he explored in detail the interaction of Slovenian textual, theatrical, cultural and political practices during the first and second aesthetic and theatrical revolution, that is, in the 1960s and 1970s.

Mateja Pezdirc Bartol: Fluidnost identitete v dramatiki Matjaža Zupančiča. Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 131–140.

Mateja Pezdirc Bartol: Fluid identity in the plays of Matjaž Zupančič. Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 131–140.
In the dramatic work of Matjaž Zupančič, the question of identity takes centre stage, as is already evident in his dramatic debut The Exorcists (Izganjalci hudiča), first published in 1989, as well as in his most recent work, The Passage (Prehod), from 2015. Matjaž Zupančič is interested in the contradictions of the modern world, extreme situations provoked by the question of human identity. He is not, however, interested in cultural or national identities, but rather in the individual in his/her relationship with the collective and/or system.

Ivana Zajc: Sodobne spremembe didaskalij: primer besedil Simone Semenič, Jezik in slovstvo. Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 151–162.
Članek predstavi spremenjeno vlogo didaskalij v sodobni slovenski dramatiki na primeru besedil Simone Semenič. Novi pojavi v didaskalijah njihova ustaljena pravila kršijo ali poudarijo. Didaskalije Simone Semenič poudarjajo pripovedno funkcijo tradicionalnih didaskalij.

Ivana Zajc: Contemporary changes in stage directions: The case of the texts of Simona Semenič. Jezik in slovstvo. 3-4/2016. 151–162.
The article presents the changed role of stage directions in contemporary Slovenian drama in the case of the texts of Simona Semenič. New phenomena in stage directions are based on the traditional characteristics of stage directions, which are subverted or strongly emphasised. The stage directions of Simona Semenič emphasise the narrative function of traditional stage directions. The bearer of this feature can be a character who gives stage directions or the dramatic author, in which case the author’s comment is highlighted in the text, thus guiding the reader’s interpretation. The article analyses the role of stage directions in framing the dramatic work and in the formation of metadrama.
